A short introduction for people that have no clue at all what we are talking about here.

What exactly is a backlink?

Nothing more or less as a link (digital pointing) on a website not yours to another website that is yours.
Links are displayed in a different colour and offer a door to another website that the surfer can open by just clicking the linkspot.

You will find a few of them in this article as well, leading you to other internet pages that offer more information about the term or word that is displayed in the link (or anchor) text. If you are already familiar with the word or term than there's no need for you to click that link. Most companies nowadays are convinced that any respectable business should have its own website to create an online presence for itself.
People are more and more starting their search online before they decide to buy a product or service. Unfortunately the old saying "He who seeks shall find", howerever mostly true for the seeking surfers -who will indeed often find what they were searching for- will not be true for most of the websites offering exactly the product of service that was searched. That is because people do not start their search with a company name, but with a product- or service name, and than still more and more often followed by an additional local search term, such as the name of the state or the city they live in. A Google search command could look something like: "Petshop in Louisville", or "Autorepair Boise". If your company has a beautiful website and is located in the mentioned places and would love to be found by surfers typing in such a search term (because they are real hot prospects!), than it could easily become a bit frustrating to find that beautiful website back on page 23 of Google's search result pages (socalled SERPs).

To better your chances for a much higher ranking of that website (preferably on SERP 1 of course), there is yet another factor besides SEO that is playing an important role: the number of backlinks on other websites leading to yours. In general you could say that the more backlinks lead to a site, the more popular that site is and the more authority that site is supposed to have according to the search engines.
And if these backlinks come from sites that are very popular themselves, having high Site-/Pageranks and/or from websites that are very relevant to the subject of your website, than your website will score well with Google, Yahoo and Bing.

By publishing an article about a subject  your company is supposed to know a lot about you can add extra authority to your website and company in 2 ways:

1) You know what you are talking about, so people (prospects) will respect your opinion and may even mail a link to your article to tell their friends or associates that they know to be interested in the that specific subject.

2) By making your article available to the public at article directories in the for your article most approprate article category, websites that are there just for that purpose, you make it easy for people interested in a specific subjec to find your information about it really fast. And, if they are impressed by your article content, than chances are that they will click on the link in the bio-, author-, or resourcebox and visit your company's website to learn more.

The reason that your article will be found faster if you "give it to the world" at an Article Directory is simple: Search Engines love Article Directory websites, because they contain lots of (often very well written, quality) information. Just the kind of info a surfer might want to know more about. Apart from that, these sites are dynamic, new information is added to them nearly every moment. Another thing Search Engines are fond of. As a result Article Directories more often than not have a much higher page ranking in Google than your own website, scoring a lot higher in the SERPs even if the exact same article was first posted to your own website.
